Life Poems - Life Poetry

Life poems can be philosophical as well as poetic
and beautiful.

Why are we here? Can we find meaning and purpose
in life before it is too late?

The tests of life aren't meant to break you,
but to make you.

- Norman Vincent Peale (tweet quote)

These are the questions that poetry asks and attempts to answer.

Life Poems - Life Poetry

This first poem is from the Persian poet Attar and goes straight to life's fundamental question.

Strive To Discover - Attar

Strive to discover the mystery
before life is taken from you.
If while living you fail
to find yourself,
to know yourself,
how will you be able to understand
the secret of your existence?

From My Psalm - John Greenleaf Whittier

The west-winds blow, and, singing low,
I hear the glad streams run;
The windows of my soul I throw
Wide open to the sun.

Before It Is Too Late - Frank Herbert Sweet

One of the sweetest life poems on this page.

If you have a tender message
Or a loving word to say
Do not wait till you forget it
But whisper it today.

The tender word unspoken
The letter never sent
The long forgotten messages
The wealth of love unspent

For these some hearts are breaking
For these some loved ones wait;
So show them that you care for them
Before it is to late.

Looking Back - Edgar Guest - Life Poems

In this life poem the poet looks back with no regrets - he has truly lived the life he wanted.

I might have been rich if I'd wanted the gold
instead of the friendships I've made.
I might have had fame if I'd sought for renown
in the hours when I purposely played.
Now I'm standing to-day on the far edge of life,
and I'm just looking backward to see
What I've done with the years and the days that were mine,
and all that has happened to me.

I haven't built much of a fortune to leave
to those who shall carry my name,
And nothing I've done shall entitle me now
to a place on the tablets of fame.
But I've loved the great sky and its spaces of blue;
I've lived with the birds and the trees;
I've turned from the splendor of silver and gold
to share in such pleasures as these.

I've lived with my friends and I've shared in their joys,
known sorrow with all of its tears;
I have harvested much from my acres of life,
though some say I've squandered my years.
For much that is fine has been mine to enjoy,
and I think I have lived to my best,
And I have no regret, as I'm nearing the end,
for the gold that I might have possessed.

Strength For Today - Henry W. Naisbitt

Strenth for today is all we need,
As there never will be a tomorrow.
For tomorrow will prove another today,
With its measure of joy and sorrow.
