Increase Your Brain Power - Improve Your Mind Power

Keeping your mind strong and mentally fit is just as important
as keeping your body strong and physically fit.

Below are tips to increase brain power and mind functioning.

Our brains have extraordinary capacities, but we have to continue
to give them the mental training they need each day.

The possession of anything
begins in the mind.

- Bruce Lee
 (tweet quote)

What are you but your thoughts and your memories?

Your mind is your universe. It is the center of all that you feel and do. With effort, you can reach heights you did not know you were capable of reaching.

Your brain is ready to work and improve. Why not let it?

If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old.
- Peter Drucker

Your brain thrives on the new. It seeks it out and pays sharp attention to it. It's a survival necessity - being attuned to the unusual and unfamiliar in the environment. It's also what makes life interesting and fun.

Variety in your environment and tough challenges to your mind are what keep your brain functioning to the optimum. Sameness and boredom, on the other hand, stifle imagination and crush your motivation to learn and expand your mind.

When you know that every day is going to be an uneventful carbon copy of the one before, life gets stale and so does your mind.

Finding new things to do, meeting new people, and testing yourself to go beyond your expectations will help keep your mind fresh and active.

It is easy to make lists of new things to do: Find a new hobby. Visit a town you've never been to before. Take piano or guitar lessons (lots of adults do - it's never to late for this). Join a hiking club and so on.

The important thing is to stop telling yourself your going to do something new
one day and start doing something new right now.

Processing new information, seeing new sights, and performing unfamiliar tasks creates a host of new neural connections in the brain. Your mind soaks up the new and interesting like the sun soaks up the rain.

If you latch on to the concept that your brain thrives on the new, over time you can make real improvements. Your old routines and hobbies may be comforting, but if you want to expand your mind and your life make this your brain's motto:

When looking for something to do,
Try something new.

Mind Power

Mental training is just as important as physical training.

If you want to live a long, successful, and aware life, you need to keep your mind active and keep pushing and testing yourself to greater heights.

I cannot stress enough how important this last part is. Superior strength of mind comes from superior effort.

Just as easy physical training doesn't give your heart the good work-out it needs, easy mental exercises do very little to increase mind power.

If you can do something without really thinking about it, then you are running your brain on already well established neural circuits. You're like a hamster spinning his wheel: you keep the wheel in motion, but you're not getting anywhere new.

If you want to expand your mind, you've got to push yourself to continually create new brain circuits.

Playing mind challenging games and puzzles appears on just about everyone's list of brain enhancing suggestions. I even have a daily word jumble game and free online jigsaw puzzles on this site.

Puzzles and games can provide good benefits to your brain's health, but the vital concept here is to make sure the games stay challenging.

Keep your brain on its toes, so to speak. Don't just become the crossword king or the sudoku queen.

We all like to be exceptionally good at something, and we get a momentary burst of pleasure and pride when we complete a puzzle in record time.

But the brain expands on what is new and challenging.

For the best benefits, you'll want to balance out having fun with the frustrations or challenges of doing something new and more difficult.

Rotate games you are good at with ones that are more demanding, and increase the difficulty level as much as you can without taking all the joy out of it. If you can maintain a balance between how tough a challenge is and how mentally rewarding it is, you have found the right level.

Curiousity will enhance your brain power.

Playing puzzles and games isn't the only way to challenge your mind. Asking questions and having a sense of wonder will open, strengthen, and enhance your brain.

Everyone marvels at the curiousity of children but we forget to be curious ourselves. Sometimes you may wonder how something works or why something is the way it is, but then quickly forget about it. A child keeps asking - over and over - until someone answers.

Write down your questions or make notes about subjects you might be interested in knowing more about. A small notebook will fit easily in your briefcase, backpack, or purse. You can make it special by printing out your favorite motivational quote or a cool picture or graphic and sticking it on the cover.

Don't rely on your memory! How often have you told yourself, I need to look this or that up when I have more time, only to forget about it? One of the best ways to improve your memory is to start writing stuff down. :-)

Seriously though, memory requires focus and attention. When you don't have the time to invest in retaining information, write it down and save it for when you do.

Ask questions and look for answers. There is so much to know about the world and really so very little time for us to be here. Make curiousity a daily habit. Don't simply be curious about something for a moment and then let it slip away. If you can rekindle your sense of awe and fascination with the world, your brain will light like fire.

Increase Your Brain Power - Change Your Routine

The brain is the most complicated
kilo of matter in the universe. - Unknown

Change your day - focus your brain

Familiar tasks are easy and thoughtlessly done. You can practically drive to work in your sleep until an unexpected detour jolts you awake. An important extention of doing something new is being on guard against falling into excessive routine.

One method for breaking yourself out of routine is to mix up your morning as much as possible. On your first work break, go out for coffee (or simply go outside, if your breaks are short) and take a coworker with you. Getting away from your desk, your emails, or your facebook will refresh you; and a new environment and conversation will stimulate your mind.

It is easy to underestimate the power of a new environment on your mind. Most people feel refreshed after stepping outside for a few moments, yet they continue to hang around their desks or the zombie-like atmosphere of the company break room. Reawaken your mind by getting away from the grind every chance you get.

Don't forget to take a co-worker with you.

Frequent conversations with co-workers will strengthen your verbal skills and enhance neural connections in the brain. Your brain works hard following conversations and coming up with interesting things to say on the spot.

Topics of conversation outside of work are not hard to find if you ask specific questions: Do you have any hobbies? What sports do you play? What books are you reading? or What music do you listen to?

And stay away from general questions: How's it going?... What's up?... To which everyone typically answers - "fine" or "nothing."

You can learn much more from other people once you get them to open up. Sometimes people keep the most interesting things about themselves to themselves. You have to ask the right questions to get them to reveal it.

Here in your mind you have complete privacy. Here there is no difference between what is and what could be.

- Chuck Palahniuk

A New Mind. A New Life.

The more you work at this, the easier it will become; and soon the prevailing question in your mind will be: Am I doing something new or am I stuck in routine again?

The more you can vary your routine, the more your brain and your life will benefit. Change your routine often enough and one day you may find you have become a different person.
